The Dominion of Peace

β€œPeace, be stilled”; and the wind stilled,
and there was a great calm”
Mark 4:39

This incident made an indelible imprint in the lives of Christ’s disciples; a raging storm silenced by the mere words of Jesus! Miracles of healings and deliverance’s had left their mark but here they witnessed His power in silencing the elements of nature.

At this juncture they were struck with fear and amazement:

β€œAnd they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Mark 4:41

There are many powerful truths veiled within this narrative. This morning I was struck with the Greek word Jesus employed here for β€œPEACE”. It is impossible to understand the full meaning conveyed here yet it impacted my own heart.

σιωπάω
sioΜ„paoΜ„
see-o-pah’-o
From σιωπη sioΜ„peΜ„ (silence, that is, a hush; properly muteness, that is, involuntary stillness, or inability to speak; and thus differing from G4602, which is rather a voluntary refusal or indisposition to speak…
Thayer’s Greek Lexicon

The storm that was raging was stilled involuntarily! There was a stillness imposed upon it. The dominion of the Peace of God silenced its fury. The truth of this gives great hope for us all. The hope is bound in His power and in His dominion of Peace being ministered unto us amid the great upheavals of life, those times that exceed our own ability to remain calm and composed. David well knew this power throughout the course of his own journey in God.

β€œFrom the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee,
when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I”
Psalm 61:2

There are times when we desperately need His divine intervention and His dominion of peace to overrule the storms of our life. When our hearts are overwhelmed within and there seems to be no solution or hope before us we can say with David:

β€œLead me…”

A key to our discovery of this Peace is to remain open to His direction and to keep ourselves sensitive to the movings of His faith within though everything around us may be chaotic and fearful.

β€œβ€¦when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I”

“So long as we are occupied with any other object than God Himself, there will be neither rest for the heart nor peace for the mind. But when we receive all that enters our lives as from His hand, then, no matter what may be our circumstances or surroundings–whether in a hovel or prison-dungeon, or at a martyr’s stake–we shall be enabled to say, ” The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places” (Ps. 16:6). But that is the language of faith, not of sight nor of sense.”

A wonderful truth Brian. We (my wife and I) know of that kind of peace when there should be nothing but turmoil in our lives.

  • Thank you, Brian. My first thought is Proverbs 20:27. His Spirit is able to reach the depths of our being, His Spirit to ours, whatever we are sensing and for whatever we need, whether for calming or stirring up to praise Him. Blessings.

Still getting more tests coming up to find out the heart issues but I am learning to slow down and am thankful for a deeper sense of Him carrying me. This situation is bringing me into a deeper appreciation of my family and those in whom I touch His Spirit living in them. These are things that are of great encouragement [as are you ;-)].

        Blessings

β€œHe will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
    Micah 7:19

As I read the definition of “peace”, this verse came to my spirit. The knowledge that God will overabound our circumstances is uplifting, and it builds our confidence in Him. His is a true dominion, where natural and spiritual forces yield to Him.

    Great word, brother.
