BUTTER AND HONEY

PART TWO

“…for butter and honey shall every one eat
that is left in the land”
Isaiah 7:24

Earlier, (See Part One) in the fifteenth verse of this chapter, we read the prophetic word given to Isaiah concerning Jesus the long awaited Messiah and Saviour. Here we read that what was true of Him is to be true of those who remain in the land after His judgements and dealings; they will also eat of “butter and honey”. The grace and beauty of the Son are to become ours also through the power of His Life ruling and reigning in us. Throughout the ages men and women of God have seen the power, majesty and purpose of God for His people. Faith has brought them to the place of embracing His Power in spite of their weaknesses. The Son becomes their “life” in substance and reality by a Grace not limited by their own doubts and blindness.

“By Grace we become what God is by nature.”
Athanasius

Even in this hour there are people who know the wonder of Life working within. This deep and powerful work of God brings clarity and separation in the midst of religious flippancy. It necessitates an obedience, submission and yielding of themselves to His Word and the moving of His Spirit. The intensity of His fire has one purpose: to purify and cleanse in order that He may empower with a fresh and Holy Expression of God in the earth.

The Word of God is not to be held in the intellect; it must be eaten and digested as butter and honey. Those who eat of His word cannot remain unchanged. There is no salvation in hearing, no safety in quoting the scriptures or listening to Sunday sermons and following great teachers.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
and drink his blood, ye have no life in you…”
John 6:53

The power and life contained within the Word, when assimilated, will never leave the recipient unchanged. Those who only hear the word but do not obey will not experience lasting impressions. The effects of the Word are momentary and temporal (James 1:24). Some are ever learning but never come to the truth. Others, who eat of the “butter and honey” of God’s Word, will know the fire within that consumes and purifies from all that is not of Him. By this “refiner’s fire” His people come to “discern between the righteous and the wicked” and “between him that serves God and him that serves him not” (Malachi 3:18). They are not fooled by the appearance of those who claim to serve God but in reality are serving themselves and their worldly ambitions.

“Butter and honey shall he eat,
that he may know to refuse the evil,
and choose the good”
Isaiah 7:15

The Cross of Change

Change: The Validity of Life

“Because they have no changes,
therefore they fear not God”
Psalm 55:19

Transformation and change are the natural order of those who are active and current in their relationship with Jesus. Those who merely subscribe to the tenets of the “Christian” faith remain unaffected by the wonder of His life and Being. Change comes from seeing Him who is invisible, tasting of His Goodness, Mercy and Holiness. One cannot touch His presence and not grow in the reverence of who He is. Without change there is no understanding of the fear of the Lord.

Knowledge may increase, familiarity with the things of God may have the appearance of being good and deep, but it is in the crucible of growth that our relationship is revealed. He came moreover He is come to work within our hearts fundamental and revolutionary transformations from what we are into the image of Christ. This transition from fallen Adam to the Risen Christ is the vehicle and means by which we are moved from an isolated and selfish entity into the substance of being “members one of another”. The validity of our walk with God is revealed in those who are being united by faith into One Body, One Life and One Heart! Jesus prayed for this, He gave Himself up to cruel and wicked men to pay the price of redemption to this end. Not only did He give Himself as an offering but He is even now giving of Himself to us to make it so. Those who do not feel the pull and the cry for this union of hearts within the wonder of His life have become distant and unable to hear the Spirit of Truth.

“Again I write a new commandment to you which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true Light already shines. The one saying to be in the light, and hating his brother, is in the darkness until now. The one loving his brother rests in the light, and no offense is in him. But the one hating his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness blinded his eyes” 1 John 2:8-11

Indifference is hatred held in apathy. They who are indifferent to the members of the Body of Christ around them are walking in the darkness. Darkness is the absence of light. Light is simply the life of Jesus beating within our hearts.

“In him was life;
and the life was the light of men”
John 1:4

HIS RIVER
HIS PROMISES

“…and it was a river that I could not pass over”
EZEKIEL 47:1 – 5
(please read first)

This river that proceeds from Him is full and deep and filled with the vibrancy of His Life. It cannot be entered into by hearing teaching or by just taking thought; it can only be entered into through the medium of obedience to the TRUTH that has been measured out to us as individuals. It is a journey and a process of growth, equipping and perseverance.

We read here of a thousand cubits being measured out to Ezekiel and it is IN the walking out of that measure of TRUTH that another thousand cubits are measured. The water becomes deeper and the blessings more keenly felt in water to the ankles. The next measurement brings us to the place of water to our knees; a new understanding of prayer, humility and life. The next is a depth of water to our loins; that place of fruitfulness and intimacy with Him. God’s plan however is to bring us to a place of full abandonment to Him. The final thousand cubits brings “waters to swim in” where we are borne along in this River of Life. To stop anywhere along this journey is to fall short of His desire for us. Some of us just like to get our feet wet. Some stop at the wonders of prayer and worship and some even go on to a place of fruitfulness. Yet to stop at any of these places is short of His intention.

The full measure of TRUTH is to bring us to the place where we are given over to the will and mind of His Spirit where we no longer walk in our own power or follow our own desires but we are borne along by the wonder of HIS LIFE and PURPOSES.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live;
yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
and THE LIFE which I now live in the flesh
I live by the faith of the Son of God”
GALATIANS 2:20

We read here of “the life” not just “a life” but the LIFE OF THE SON. There must be within His own a cry for something deeper, something beyond the scope of our vision that beckons us to leave the shallows of our religion, our plans and agendas. There must be more than the “same old” netting the same results in a circuitous path that leaves us no further ahead after years of treading the same path.

Waters to swim in. A River that could not be passed over. These are the descriptions of a LIFE that calls out to His Own.

“If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,
out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water”
JOHN 7:38

His heart is for us to launch out from the shallows of where we are and set our hearts for the depths of His Being. There the waters flow and the Life of Him is discovered in a fullness that transforms us by the wonder of His Grace.

“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
LUKE 5:4

BLESSING

PART ONE

“To you first,
God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you,
in turning away every one of you from your iniquities”
ACTS 3:26

We hear much about blessing today and as we read here that is one of the reasons that Jesus came. However, let us note that the blessing spoken of here comes in the form of an enabling to turn from our iniquities. That blessing can only be realized by the power of the SON being received into our hearts by faith. The tenets of the Christian Teaching HAVE NO INTRINSIC POWER IN THEMSELVES! The power and the life of the New Covenant is not in words (1 Corinthians 4:20); the POWER of the New Covenant is solely based on the RESURRECTION LIFE OF THE SON. “God HAVING (past tense) RAISED UP….JESUS”! This same resurrected Jesus is NOW SENT to us for the purpose of blessing us IN turning us from our iniquities. He did not come to leave us in our carnality, our warped and corrupted ways, our malice, evil reasoning and lust; HE came to save us FROM our sins! For it is SIN that keeps us from the way of peace, SIN that perverts our interactions with other people, and SIN that prevents us from the WAY of LIFE. A salvation that leaves us in bondage and sin is unthinkable!

“…thou shalt call his name JESUS:
for he shall save his people FROM their sins”
MATTHEW 1:21

His blessing has come. It rests upon HIS people like a cloud of glory and power. This blessing seeks to permeate every aspect of our life, freeing us from the corruption of the First Adam and bringing us into the LIFE of the Last Adam! This Blessing is ever active IN our lives to “work in us to WILL and to DO of HIS good pleasure”. This Blessing is ever seeking, ever drawing and ever calling us to turn from our ways unto HIS. Our salvation rests in the resurrection LIFE of the SON not in the will power of men.

“For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ:
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
But NOW is Christ risen from the dead…”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:16 – 20

It is in our yielding to that BLESSING that all that God has purposed in Christ begins to become a reality in our daily lives. HE IS OUR SALVATION AND HIS NAME IS JESUS FOR HE HAS COME TO SAVE US FROM OUR SINS.

Ω

Souls are not made sweet by taking [ill tempers] out,
but by putting something in – a great Love, a new Spirit, the Spirit of Christ.
Christ, the Spirit of Christ, interpenetrating ours, sweetens, purifies, transforms all.
This can only eradicate what is wrong, renovate and regenerate,
and rehabilitate the inner man. Will-power does not change men.
Time does not change men. Christ does.
Therefore “Let that mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”

RENEWED

“And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed BY the renewing of your mind…”
ROMANS 12:2

The depth and power of our salvation is realized to the degree that we are TRANSFORMED BY the renewing of our minds in Christ Jesus. This must be an ongoing operation of the Holy Spirit. In order for this work to continue there must be a conscious effort on our part to resist being conformed to the things (the tempers, lusts, pride, envies, jealousies, hatred, self advancement, backbiting, anger, and all of the other things that come in the many forms of temptation in our daily life) of THIS WORLD. The transformation process of the GRACE of God is to the end that we may PROVE what the will of God is for US AS INDIVIDUALS. Men who never seek God’s Will, will never find it. Men who never DO HIS WILL, will never know it. Men who walk after their own ways will never experience the RENEWAL of mind that is essential to the growth of proving and knowing HIS WILL. We, by nature, are at enmity with God; antagonistic to the knowing and the doing of HIS WILL. WE MUST BE TRANSFORMED and that is accomplished ONLY BY THE RENEWING OF OUR MINDS.

There is never a point of arrival; only an ever increasing understanding of the depth, the width, the height and the breadth of the LOVE and NATURE OF GOD! HE is ever beckoning us to “come up higher” to see HIS humility, HIS Glory, HIS Wonder and HIS MAJESTY. Even holy celestial beings in beholding HIM are left with only the words, HOLY, HOLY, HOLY…! How can we stop in our pursuit? How can we be content with the little we see, know and understand of all that HE IS? We cannot allow age, infirmity, disappointment or compromise to thwart our pursuit of KNOWING HIM.

Being TRANSFORMED is the eternal call to those who have touched the CRY of HIS HEART for relationship with man. Can we not hear the voice of the Lord God walking in the cool of the day crying out “Adam where are you….”? Have we not been gripped by this call? It is in hearing that CALL that we respond “by the mercies of God…” to present our lives unto HIM in such submission (living sacrifices) that we are no longer conformed to this world but we are transformed BY THE RENEWING of OUR MIND (how we see, interpret and understand HIS WILL) in the midst of this dark world. This is not an hour to grow weary or to settle for the status quo; it is an hour to press in with all diligence for HIS mercies to arise in our hearts to a greater submission. Only then will we BE ABLE TO PROVE THAT GOOD, ACCEPTABLE AND PERFECT WILL OF GOD. No teaching in and of itself can enable us to know the will of God in this way; without the accompanying ACT of the renewing of our minds it will simply produce the highest form deception possible. We need look no further than the scribes and Pharisees! The word Pharisee means “called out ones”. How frightening it is to start out well but to stop somewhere along the way! The purpose of being “called out” is that we may ENTER IN!

“Since therefore it remains that some must enter in,
and those to whom it was first preached
did not enter because of disobedience”
HEBREWS 4:6

Ω

“Therefore we do not lose heart.
Even though our outward man is perishing,
yet the inward man is being RENEWED day by day”
