Light

“And God said,
Let there be light: and there was light”
Genesis 1:3

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
2 Corinthians 4:6

There is a continual unveiling of Himself to His own. These countless expressions of Him are Light; the spectrum of Himself as it were. Within natural light, there are bands and diversities of hues. The natural things of earth are mere representations of the true and eternal things of God (Romans 1:20). As the natural light gives illumination to this world, so His Light is given to illuminate His World, filled with the Glory and Wonder of Him.

We read in Genesis that God brought forth light in the midst of darkness (first day). This light was given before the creation of the sun and moon (fourth day). It was light (illumination in Hebrew) of a different and higher order than the natural light (luminaries in Hebrew translated as “light” in Genesis 1:16) of the sun. In all that God does He begins with Himself and His purposes. That first light given was the Light of Himself before creation began, for God’s purpose was to fill the whole earth with His Glory. God’s work is always “prophetic”. He created food and all the essentials of life before He created humanity. The answer was given before the need. The “Lamb was slain” from the foundation of the world. God is ever moving toward His End and the light spoken of on the “first day” contained within it the sacrificial, redemptive, and foreordained plan of God. This Light included the revelation and judgment of evil and the consequential full redemption and salvation predetermined before the creation of the world in Christ.

“the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
Revelation 13:8

Because of this, God requires our participation and obedience so that we might grow and be transformed by the illumination of His glorious Light (see Romans 12:1-2).

“But the one doing the truth comes to the Light…”
John 3:21

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 3:18

Change is the revelation
of our beholding His Light
