“I, even I, am He that comforteth you…”
Isaiah 51:12

Take comfort in His watchful care over your soul. Not only is Christ our Saviour, our redeemer, our justifier, and the One who works in us the sanctification of a consecrated life, but HE is the ONE who keeps us. In all our trials and testing, He is there, watching over us. When the enemy with his fiery darts seeks to destroy all hope of standing true, He is there. When there is no wind in our sails, when we feel bereft of impulse or desire, He is there. He is our Shepherd who keeps His Father’s sheep.

Psalm 139

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there!

If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”

even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You.”
Psalm 139:7-12 (ESV)

Take Comfort

He Works for Our Good

“O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones”
Isaiah 54:11-12

In affliction, tempest and sorrow, the God of all comfort comes softly like dew settling on the grass after the long night. His silent ways bring whispers of hope within the human heart, and His strong arms hold and carry us through our circumstances. He walks with us through the valleys. He gently embraces the wounded heart and, in the secret of His ways, we see the colours of His handiwork. We see the precious stones of His making become the foundation of our lives; not only strong and stable but filled with the beauty of His own being.

There is no such thing as wasted tears for those who know their God. Sorrows and trials become part of the writing of His story in our lives. His comfort becomes a currency that we can share with others; it has become ours through the experiences of life with Him.

“Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:4 *(see note below)

His promise of comfort in our trials is the foundation of our hope in Him. The history of His faithfulness gives us strong hope to face the path that lies before us. The ONE who faced Calvary, who prayed with such intensity that great drops of blood fell as He communed with His Father, is the same ONE who can keep us in our dark hour. As He comforts our broken hearts and His Grace lifts us, the world will know that we are not without the rich resources of our Risen Christ.

His mercies are new every morning, and though weeping may endure for the night, joy will come in the morning.

*Note: It is a vital necessity for the true servants of God be subject to discouragement, sorrow, disappointment and trials, for the measure of comfort they receive will be correspondent to the comfort they can offer to others.

“Troubled soul, the “much tribulation” will soon be over, and as you enter the “kingdom of God” you shall then see, no longer “through a glass darkly” but in the unshadowed sunlight of the Divine presence, that “all things” did “work together” for your personal and eternal good.”

  • I love this. We can take heart in God’s eternal plan for our lives here on earth and the one to come. Only God can change chaos into order with just one word. He is still in control of our world, and we can be sure that it’s for our advantage.

  • pcviii03 says:

“…2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing…” James 1:2-4

We will endure if we persevere through His Spirit.
