“Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who is the One saying to you, Give Me to drink, you would have asked Him, and He would give you living water.”
John 4:10 (LITV)

The marvellous words of Jesus will always lead us to a deeper relationship with Him.

“If you knew the gift of God,
and who is the One saying to you,
Give Me to drink, you would have asked Him…”

The depth of our asking, seeking, and pursuit of Him will be proportionate to the measure that we know Him. Hidden resources await us; untold provisions are to be found in desert places.

“Sir, You have no vessel, and the well is deep.
From where then do You have living water?”
John 4:11 (LITV)

To the natural man, the provisions are not visible. The hopelessness of life has rendered the heart barren. Life has become an uneventful routine of mundane existence. The woman to whom Jesus spoke these living words was a despised Samaritan. Her life was sinful; she was married five times and was now living with a man outside of marriage.

“IF YOU KNEW…”

It is to such a one that Jesus holds out the offer of living water. Has your life been filled with failure, broken relationships, and the feeling of abandonment and despair? Do you feel beyond hope of any joy or purpose in life? Come to Jesus and consider His words and His heart.

“If you knew the gift of God…”

We may know Him as the sinless One. We may know Him in some religious persuasion, with fear or trepidation, because of our breakdowns and the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Yet, Jesus speaks: “If you knew the gift”.

Jesus Christ is the gift of God. Unto us the Son of God is offered, regardless of our merit or our lot in life.

“For a Child is born; to us a Son is given; and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

The true knowledge of God frees us from our separation. We can experience the truth of the prodigal son by forsaking the pigsty to return and find the acceptance and embrace of our heavenly Father.

The “living water” awaits all who come to Him in truth and brokenness of heart. His heart is full, His mercies fail not, nor is His hand withheld from those who come to Him in hope.

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”
Psalm 51:17 (LITV)

Whether it be the woman at the well lost in sin, or the prodigal son who once lived in the provisions of the Father’s house, the gift of God offers freedom, light and forgiveness. Heaviness of heart, despair, and sorrow are invitations to the Love of God.

“Come unto Me, all ye that labour
and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

  • The extent or degree to which we conscientiously cultivate intensity of intimacy by our willing receptivity of and wise responsiveness to the One Three Person God of all grace and all glory is in perfect proportion to the intimacy’s intensity of love communion with Him we shall enjoy endlessly through the eons of eternity.
