Asa – An Example in Leadership Part Two

Asa – An Example in Leadership

(Part 2)

“And Asa did that which was good and right
in the eyes of the Lord his God.”
2 Chronicles 14:2

(continued from Part One)

As King Asa continued in his walk before the Lord, this is the report he obtained from God: “And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.” The heart of all who are making Him their Lord seek by every means to obtain such a testimony! We read in the narrative of his leadership that he not only cleansed Israel from strange gods and idols but also built walls and fortified the cities of Judah in a time of peace and prosperity.

“He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest. He had no war in those years, for the LORD gave him peace. And he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought him, and he has given us peace on every side.” So they built and prospered.”
2 Chronicles 14:6-7 (ESV)

True leadership in God’s house is one of foresight and wisdom. In the time of peace, Asa prepared Judah for war. He considered the history of God’s people and was not blinded by the peace that they were currently enjoying. He also prepared an army trained in the art of warfare, so they would be equipped and ready should trouble come.

“And Asa had an army of 300,000 from Judah, armed with large shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin that carried shields and drew bows. All these were mighty men of valor.”
2 Chronicles 14:8

In the reading of Asa’s works, as he walked before the Lord his God, we see the wisdom that God had revealed in his early days. Sadly, in much of the leadership in our day, we see few who are actively preparing God’s people for the storm that is about to engulf our land. Even within the landscape of North America, there is rage and a polarization, and a large segment of those who call themselves by His name are becoming embroiled in the political indignation of today.

The good fight of faith will not allow His own to engage in carnal warfare. The wise and true leadership of this hour will prepare God’s people for the art of warfare in the Spirit, overcoming evil by doing good. The unmitigated anger arising can only be met by the seeming foolishness of love and forgiveness. These are the graces with which we are to meet this hour. It takes a work of great preparation to abide so deeply in Him that the responses of our hearts will reveal the crucified ONE and not the fleshly anger of the carnal man.

The warfare of Asa reflected the nature of the Kingdom of Israel. When Jesus came, the warfare He brought was spiritual, effective, and had eternal results.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds”
2 Corinthians 10:3-4

In Paul’s day, thousands of Christians perished for their testimony of Christ. Rather than arming ourselves with carnal weapons, we ought to be seeking Him who can prepare us to be “living sacrifices”, ready to overcome the devil himself by the blood of the Lamb, by the word of our testimony, and not loving our lives even unto death.

We may talk glibly about such things, but let us not be deceived like Peter regarding our readiness for that day. It is a day to prepare, a day to gather with one another, and “so much more as we see THE DAY approaching.”

May God raise up leadership who sense the impending chaos and seek to inspire His people to walk worthy of Him in this day. The leadership of Asa was an example to us in our day to prepare God’s people in the day of prosperity before the storm comes. Too often in history, the people of God have failed to give heed to Him in the days of their prosperity:

“I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, ‘I will not listen.’ This has been your way from your youth, that you have not obeyed My voice”
Jeremiah 22:21 (ESV)

We are not given the time frame, but sometime after Asa had assembled an army in Judah, we read of “Zerah the Ethiopian” coming to invade Judah with an army of over one million men and 300 chariots!

“Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots and came as far as Mareshah. And Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up their lines of battle in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.”
2 Chronicles 14:9-10 (ESV)

The word declares, “Asa went out to meet him”. Asa went out to meet this formidable enemy in the Name of the Lord his God.

“And Asa cried to the LORD his God, “O LORD, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.”
2 Chronicles 14:11 (ESV)

God’s response:

“So the LORD defeated the Ethiopians
before Asa and before Judah,
and the Ethiopians fled.”
2 Chronicles 14:12

  • “Love always involves responsibility, and love always involves sacrifice. And we do not really love Christ unless we are prepared to face His task and to take up His Cross.” – William Barclay

Lavish love consistently compels righteous responsibility and is earnestly expressed, munificently manifested, divinely demonstrated by selfless sacrifice, as in saintly service to our intimately indwelling, invigoratingly inworking, instigatingly interfusing supernal Savior and superscendent Sanctifier, Who Is Himself Love, Life,  Light, Liberty, for His constant caring, His ceaseless compassion and His celestial companionship to His cherished creation.

    2 Corinthians 5:13-15 AMP
13 If we are out of our mind [just unstable fanatics as some critics say], it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for your benefit. 14 For the love of Christ controls and compels us, because we have concluded this, that One died for all, therefore all died; 15 and He died for all, so that all those who live would no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and was raised for their sake.

    Romans 5:5 AMP
Therefore, since we have been justified [that is, acquitted of sin, declared blameless before God] by faith, [let us grasp the fact that] we have peace with God [and the joy of reconciliation with Him] through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed). 2 Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our  hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power]. 3 And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; 4 and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity); and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation]. 5 Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

“Through Him…” There is nothing of eternal value that we will ever have that is apart from Him. Love, His Love is the spring from which all things proceed, and it is the honor of His people to pursue Him from whom all things are. His Spirit invites us to “taste and see” of His goodness that our access to this magnificent Tree of Life is our portion to refresh and invigorate His people.

      Blessings my friend!

  • Yes, I thoroughly agree! Thanks much, beloved brother.

Romans 11:36 AMP For from Him [all things originate] and through Him [all things live and exist] and to Him are all things [directed]. To Him be glory and honor forever! Amen.

An engaging excerpt from: Biblical Hermeneutics at StackExchange https://shorturl.at/6edBs that absolutely accelerates me gloriously Godward is as follows:

Ellicott sums up the force of the meaning here:

    (36) Of him, and through him, and to him.—All things proceed from God, all things are made or wrought by Him, and all things exist for His glory, and to carry out His ends.

Barnes is more detailed and specific:

For of him – εξ αὐτοῦ ex autou; compare 1 Corinthians 1:30; 1 Corinthians 8:6. This expression doubtless means that he is the original source and fountain of all blessings. He is the Creator of all, the rich “fountain from which all streams of existence take their rise. …

And through him – δἰ αὐτοῦ di autou; That is, by his immediate operating agency. The former expression, “of him,” affirmed that he was the original source of all things; this declares that all are by him, or through him, as their immediate cause. It is not merely by his plan or purpose; it is by his agency, by the direct exertion of his power in their creation and bestowment. By his power they are still directed and controlled. Human agency, therefore, could not lay him under any obligation. He does not need the aid of man; and he did not call in that aid in the creation and government of the world. He is the independent Creator and Lord, and on him none can have a claim.

To him – εἰς αὐτὸν eis autos; This expression denotes the final cause, the reason or end for which all things were formed. It is to promote his honor and glory. It is to manifest his praise, or to give a proper putting forth of the glorious attributes of God; that the exceeding greatness, and goodness, and grandeur of his character might be evinced. …

The Expositor’s Commentary is more succinct:

Romans 11:36. ὅτι ἐξ αὐτοῦ κ.τ.λ. Strictly speaking, the ὅτι confirms the last truth—man’s absolute dependence on God—by making it part of a wider generalization. ἐξ αὐτοῦ: from Him, as their source; διʼ αὐτοῦ: through Him, as the power by whose continuous energy the world is sustained and ruled; εἰς αὐτὸν: unto Him, as their goal, for whose glory they exist.

This whole message of Paul here is even more tersely summarized by Paul elsewhere where says that God is “all in all”, 1 Cor 3:7, 10:33, 12:6, 15:28, Eph 1:23.

    • Brian T. says:

Faith is revealed in those who are subservient to its wonder by the life lived and His Will served. As we grow into His Love His Will becomes ours, we love what He loves and we disdain that which dishonors Him. Malachi prophesied of our day and His coming…

“But who can endure the day of His coming? And who will stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fuller’s soap. And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and He shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them like gold and like silver, that they may be presenters of a grain offering in righteousness to Jehovah.”
      Malachi 3:2-3

There is no fire that burns as intently as His Love. There is within His being a Fire of an eternal flame that all who dwell near its presence must burn with the same purity of flame. How such things thrill my heart… The Seraphim in Isaiah 6 (Seraphim in the Hebrew means Fiery Ones) and even they in their perfection must shield their eyes from His glory! Oh that we would see Him more clearly and comprehend the atmosphere of His presence and of all the Living things which are able to dwell in such Holy Courts.

“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
      Revelation 22:14

The privileges offered to us in Christ of such Holy access are ever unto those who find in Him the grace to serve Him wholly. The exhortation of the Apostle Paul for us to “work out our own salvation with fear and trembling is predicated on His working out in us to will and to do”. There are many in our day who shun His workings to bring a heart that has been captivated by Him into the glory of a subdued heart.

      Hasten the Day Lord!

      Blessings my friend.

  • pcviii03 says:

The wisdom of Asa to fortify in a time of peace, rather than to wait until it was needed, because it is always needed, is a great example of living prepared.
How often does the church find itself in a war with no defense, because they were always counting on the grace of God to pull them out of the trouble?
Seeking God, setting the stones of the word of God, and learning how to use the armor must always be the training, and not in the midst of a battle – losing is the outcome.
Faith is shaken, stumbling happens, there is no real footing because they are not prepared.
Thank you for this insight, brother. Blessings to you.
